AIROC™ CYW20829 Voice Remote Reference Solution

This Solution demo demonstrates the implementation of a AIROC™ CYW20829 Voice Remote Reference Solution using the Infineon AIROC™ CYW20829 Bluetooth® LE MCU and ModusToolbox™ Software Environment. This application is designed to work on 2 platforms i.e CYW920829-VR and CYW920829M2EVK-02. For the instructions releated to CYW920829M2EVK-02, Please refer to README_M2_EVK.md readme.

Requirements

Hardware Setup

This example uses the kit’s default configuration. See the CYW920829-VR Voice Remote kit user guide to ensure that the kit is configured correctly.

Software Setup

Install a terminal emulator if you don't have one. Instructions in this document use Tera Term.

Using the code example

Create the project and open it using one of the following:

In Eclipse IDE for ModusToolbox™ software
  1. Click the New Application link in the Quick Panel (or, use File > New > ModusToolbox™ Application). This launches the Project Creator tool.

  2. Pick a kit supported by the code example from the list shown in the Project Creator - Choose Board Support Package (BSP) dialog.

    When you select a supported kit, the example is reconfigured automatically to work with the kit. To work with a different supported kit later, use the Library Manager to choose the BSP for the supported kit. You can use the Library Manager to select or update the BSP and firmware libraries used in this application. To access the Library Manager, click the link from the Quick Panel.

    You can also just start the application creation process again and select a different kit.

    If you want to use the application for a kit not listed here, you may need to update the source files. If the kit does not have the required resources, the application may not work.

  3. In the Project Creator - Select Application dialog, choose the example by enabling the checkbox.

  4. (Optional) Change the suggested New Application Name.

  5. The Application(s) Root Path defaults to the Eclipse workspace which is usually the desired location for the application. If you want to store the application in a different location, you can change the Application(s) Root Path value. Applications that share libraries should be in the same root path.

  6. Click Create to complete the application creation process.

In command-line interface (CLI)

ModusToolbox™ software provides the Project Creator as both a GUI tool and the command line tool, "project-creator-cli". The CLI tool can be used to create applications from a CLI terminal or from within batch files or shell scripts. This tool is available in the {ModusToolbox™ software install directory}/tools_{version}/project-creator/ directory.

Use a CLI terminal to invoke the "project-creator-cli" tool. On Windows, use the command line "modus-shell" program provided in the ModusToolbox™ software installation instead of a standard Windows command-line application. This shell provides access to all ModusToolbox™ software tools. You can access it by typing modus-shell in the search box in the Windows menu. In Linux and macOS, you can use any terminal application.

The "project-creator-cli" tool has the following arguments:

The following example clones the "mtb-example-btstack-freertos-cyw20829-voice-remote" application with the desired name "mtb-example-btstack-freertos-cyw20829-voice-remote" configured for the CYW920829-VR BSP into the specified working directory.

Note: The project-creator-cli tool uses the git clone and make getlibs commands to fetch the repository and import the required libraries. For details, see the "Project creator tools" section of the ModusToolbox™ software user guide (locally available at {ModusToolbox™ software install directory}/docs_{version}/mtb_user_guide.pdf).

To work with a different supported kit later, use the Library Manager to choose the BSP for the supported kit. You can invoke the Library Manager GUI tool from the terminal using make library-manager command or use the Library Manager CLI tool "library-manager-cli" to change the BSP.

The "library-manager-cli" tool has the following arguments:

Following example adds the CYW9202829-VR BSP to the already created application and makes it the active BSP for the app:

In third-party IDEs

Use one of the following options:

  • Use the standalone Project Creator tool:

    1. Launch Project Creator from the Windows Start menu or from {ModusToolbox™ software install directory}/tools_{version}/project-creator/project-creator.exe.

    2. In the initial Choose Board Support Package screen, select the BSP, and click Next.

    3. In the Select Application screen, select the appropriate IDE from the Target IDE drop-down menu.

    4. Click Create and follow the instructions printed in the bottom pane to import or open the exported project in the respective IDE.


  • Use command-line interface (CLI):

    1. Follow the instructions from the In command-line interface (CLI) section to create the application.

    2. Export the application to a supported IDE using the make <ide> command.

    3. Follow the instructions displayed in the terminal to create or import the application as an IDE project.

Building and Programming the board

  1. Connect the board to your PC using the provided USB cable through the KitProg3 USB connector.

  2. Use your favorite serial terminal application and connect the USB-UART cable to the UART connector on the remote board. Configure the terminal application to access the serial(COM) port using the following settings.

    Baud rate: 115200 bps; Data: 8 bits; Parity: None; Stop: 1 bit; Flow control: None; New line for receive data: Line Feed(LF) or Auto setting

  3. Program the board.

    • Using Eclipse IDE for ModusToolbox:
    1. Select the application project in the Project Explorer.
    2. In the Quick Panel, scroll down, and click <Application Name> Program (KitProg3_MiniProg4).
    • Using CLI:

    ​ From the terminal, execute the make program command to build and program the application using the default toolchain to the default target. You can specify a target and toolchain manually:

    make program TARGET=<BSP> TOOLCHAIN=<toolchain>
    

    ​ Example:

    make program TARGET=CYW920829-VR TOOLCHAIN=GCC_ARM
    

    After programming, the application starts automatically. Observe the messages on the UART terminal, and wait for the device to make all the required connections.

Debugging

You can debug the example to step through the code. In the IDE, use the <Application Name> Debug (KitProg3_MiniProg4) configuration in the Quick Panel. For more details, see the "Program and Debug" section in the Eclipse IDE for ModusToolbox User Guide: {ModusToolbox install directory}/ide_{version}/docs/mt_ide_user_guide.pdf.

Firmware Design and Implementation

Steps to use the voice remote application

  1. Build Your application for either Android TV or OPUS Changing ENABLE_CODEC in Makefile

  1. Currently, this application has support for Analog Mic Front-end for voice encoding. The Remote Hardware comes with Analog Mic mounted on the PCB. Change ENABLE_MIC in makefile to select the right mic configuration.

  1. To enable the RED LED, change the following ENABLE_RED_LED flag in Makefile. When the Red LED is enabled while the device is advertising, the user can observe the RED LED on the Voice Remote blinking.

    ENABLE_RED_LED = 1
  2. To enable the GREEN LED, change the following ENABLE_GREEN_LED flag in Makefile. When the Green LED is enabled on every key press, the user can observe the blinking of GREEN LED on the Voice Remote.

    ENABLE_GREEN_LED = 1
  3. To Remove the Pairing Info, press the "Home Key" for 10 seconds on the remote control to remove the pairing information. When the remote control is paired to TV, please "unpair/forget" on the TV first and then press "Home Key" for 10 seconds to delete pairing.

  4. Please note that OPUS encoding for audio can be tested only if the host supports the OPUS decoding.

  5. When Battery Capacity is less than 5%, the device will go to hibernate mode; And to come out of this hibernate state, Power Cycle the Remote by removing the battery and inserting it again.

The following points are some of the design and implementation specific details that a user might need to know to understand the behavior.

  1. The Voice Remote starts advertising as "HID-Remote" at High duty for 60 seconds and then followed by low duty for 30 seconds and then the advertisements are turned off.

  2. When the advertisements are off, pressing any key on the remote control will start advertisements to get it discovered by peer devices.

Test Procedure

The Complexity in testing the voice remote will depend on the Host. AIROC™ Bluetooth Connect App Desktop application is simpler for testing non-audio functionality. But it cannot be used for testing Audio.

General Test Instructions

The Remote application uses flash to store pairing/bonding information. In order to clear the previously bonded devices and to flash a new firmware to the board, use the following command from CLI.

make erase
make program

Testing on AIROC™ Bluetooth Connect App Desktop Application

Download the AIROC™ Bluetooth Connect App as Windows PC host to test the application for non-voice functionality.

  1. Click on "Start Scan" in AIROC™ Bluetooth Connect App to discover the nearby devices. Connect to the device listed as “HID-Remote” in the Bluetooth Connect App application. Select the device and click on 'Connect'. Alternately, double click the device to connect.

  2. After Connecting successfully, Click on “Pair”.

    1. On receiving “Pairing Successful” pop up window, click on “Discover all attributes”.
    2. Now the Attributes and attribute handles will be populated. And Now click on “Read all characteristics” and “Read all descriptors”.

  3. Once all the characteristics and descriptors are populated, click on “Enable Notifications”. After Enabling notifications, the client characteristic Configuration Descriptor will have “01:00”. On every button press, you should be able to see the keycodes in the Bluetooth Connect App logs as below.

Testing on Android TV

  1. Turn on your Android TV and navigate to the "Settings" using the Remote that came with the TV.
  2. In "Remotes & accessories" section under the "Settings", click on "Pair Remote or accessory".
  3. Once you click on the "Pair Remote or accessory", the TV will start discovering Bluetooth devices around it.
  4. Discover the "hid-remote" device and click on it. Make sure your device is advertising at this time.
  5. Once paired and connected, make sure all the keys are working.
  6. For the voice functionality, Use some common phrases that the Google TV can understand such as "What's the weather at x location?".

Known issues on Android TV

  1. Setup and MultiFunction Key may not be supported by some of the TV Vendors. So, users can modify as per the TV support.
  2. Random disconnection is observed with Nvidia Shield. There is a known issue with the Nvdia Sheild Pro Android Box. Meanwhile, the Supervision timeout of 5 seconds will help the remote to get reconnected to the peer device immediately on disconnection.
  3. The Voice Remote application is tested on the Nvdia Sheild Pro Android Box.

Testing on Windows 10

  1. Build Your application for OPUS Changing ENABLE_CODEC in Makefile and progarm the voice remote board.

  1. Navigate to Windows 10 Settings and click on "Devices" as shown below. Devices
  2. Click on "Add Bluetooth or Other device". Make sure your device is advertising at this time. Bluetooth-Device
  3. "hid-remote" will be listed in the device discovery. Once you click on the device, Windows will initiate pairing and connection. The Windows will show a notification that "Windows is setting up a device". Windows will take few seconds to exchange link keys.
  4. Once connected, you will get the following Notification on Windows. Bluetooth-Device
  5. Open a notepad with some text in it, to see the keypress changes in the application.
  6. You can reset the device and the device will be automatically reconnected to check for reconnection.

Resources and Settings

This section explains the ModusToolbox resources and their configuration as used in this code example. Note that all the configuration explained in this section has already been done in the code example. ModusToolbox stores the configuration settings of the application in the design.modus file. This file is used by the graphical configurators, which generate the configuration firmware. This firmware is stored in the application’s GeneratedSource folder.

  • Device Configurator: Use this tool to enable/configure the peripherals and pins used in the application. See the Device Configurator Guide.
