# EZ-PD™ PMG1 MCU: I2C bootloader
This example demonstrates the I2C-based firmware update on the EZ-PD™ PMG1 MCU devices using the Host Processor Interface (HPI). The bootloader handles application firmware image download, verification, and upgrades.

## Hardware setup
1. Setup the hardware with MCU connections according to the USB PD DRP reference schematics mentioned in the [AN235644 – USB PD DRP (dual-role power) schematics using EZ-PD™ PMG1 MCUs](https://www.infineon.com/an235644).
2. Ensure that the HPI hardware connections from EZ-PD™ PMG1 MCU are according to the following tables:

GPIO pin **HPI_ADDR_CFG** is used to set HPI slave address. Bootloader can work with three different slave addresses.

3. Provide the 24 V, 5 A power to power up the PMG1-S1, PMG1-S2, and PMG1-S3 boards and 12 V, 5 A power to power up the PMG1-S0 board in source mode.
4. Use the SWD programming header for flashing the MCU.

This code example does not need any additional software or tools. However, [EZ-PD&trade; Protocol Analyzer Utility](https://www.infineon.com/cms/en/product/evaluation-boards/cy4500) can be used to analyze and debug the USB PD communication on the Configuration Channel (CC) line.
## Using the code example
### Create the project
The ModusToolbox&trade; tools package provides the Project Creator as both a GUI tool and a command line tool.

1. Open the Project Creator GUI tool.
There are several ways to do this, including launching it from the dashboard or from inside the Eclipse IDE. For more details, see the [Project Creator user guide](https://www.infineon.com/ModusToolboxProjectCreator) (locally available at *{ModusToolbox&trade; install directory}/tools_{version}/project-creator/docs/project-creator.pdf*).
2. On the **Choose Board Support Package (BSP)** page, select a kit supported by this code example. See [Supported kits](#supported-kits-make-variable-target).
> **Note:** To use this code example for a kit not listed here, you may need to update the source files. If the kit does not have the required resources, the application may not work.
3. On the **Select Application** page:
a. Select the **Applications(s) Root Path** and the **Target IDE**.
> **Note:** Depending on how you open the Project Creator tool, these fields may be pre-selected for you.
b. Select this code example from the list by enabling its check box.
> **Note:** You can narrow the list of displayed examples by typing in the filter box.
c. (Optional) Change the suggested **New Application Name** and **New BSP Name**.
d. Click **Create** to complete the application creation process.

<details><summary><b>Use Project Creator CLI</b></summary>
The 'project-creator-cli' tool can be used to create applications from a CLI terminal or from within batch files or shell scripts. This tool is available in the *{ModusToolbox&trade; install directory}/tools_{version}/project-creator/* directory.
Use a CLI terminal to invoke the 'project-creator-cli' tool. On Windows, use the command-line 'modus-shell' program provided in the ModusToolbox&trade; installation instead of a standard Windows command-line application. This shell provides access to all ModusToolbox&trade; tools. You can access it by typing "modus-shell" in the search box in the Windows menu. In Linux and macOS, you can use any terminal application.
The following example clones the "[EZ-PD&trade; PMG1 I2C bootloader](https://github.com/Infineon/mtb-example-pmg1-i2c-bootloader)" application with the desired name "Pmg1I2cBootloader" configured for the *PMG1-CY7113* BSP into the specified working directory, *C:/mtb_projects*:

The 'project-creator-cli' tool has the following arguments:

### Open the project
After the project has been created, you can open it in your preferred development environment.

## Operation
1. Ensure that the steps listed in the [Hardware setup](#hardware-setup) section are completed.
2. Program the board using one of the following:

From the terminal, execute the `make program` command to build and program the application using the default toolchain to the default target. The default toolchain is specified in the application's Makefile but you can override this value manually:

## Design and implementation
To utilize this bootloader, build the project and place the generated binaries (*.elf* files) in the bootloader folder of the [USBPD DRP HPI](https://github.com/Infineon/mtb-example-pmg1-usbpd-drp-hpi) application project. The bootloader's primary function is to validate and load the application firmware. If the application firmware is valid, the bootloader loads it; otherwise, it remains in bootloader mode, allowing for firmware updates. The bootloader's workflow is illustrated in **Figure 1**.

**HPI interface** <br>
The bootloader uses the HPI to communicate with the host processors or embedded controllers (EC) over the I2C protocol. The host processor and EC are responsible for performing firmware updates and making device policy. The bootloader utilizes the following key features of the HPI to perform firmware updates and image validation:
- Firmware version identification
- Device mode identification
- Firmware image validation
- Jump to boot or alternate firmware
- Flash memory read and write operations
**Architecture** <br>
The bootloader supports both single and dual application architecture modes.
- **Single application mode:** In single application mode, the flash memory contains a bootloader and a single application firmware. The bootloader is responsible for validating and loading the application image. The bootloader can only update the application firmware. <br><br>
- **Dual application mode:** In dual application mode, the flash memory contains a bootloader and two copies of the application firmware. In this configuration, the bootloader is responsible for validating and loading the application image, as it does in single application mode. Additionally, each application firmware has the capability to update and validate the alternate application firmware.
**Slave address identification** <br>
At initialization, the bootloader identifies the I2C slave address based on the `HPI_ADDR_CFG` GPIO drive mode. The address will be selected as per **Table 2**. This identified I2C address is used by the bootloader to communicate and the same address is passed to the application firmware to communicate.

### Memory layout
The first 7168 bytes of the flash memory is reserved for the bootloader and the last two rows of flash memory is reserved for the application metadata. Remaining flash space is used by the application firmware. The size allocated to the application firmware can vary depending on the size of the flash available on the target device.
The RAM memory is shared between the bootloader and the applications.
